MEXICO: Total gang killings under-reported

A confidential government report on the number of people killed by gangsters during the current administration of President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa shows that the government knew that the local press has been under-reporting gang killings by over 25%. The Mexico City press has been keeping an official tally of gang killings since President Calderón launched his war on organised crime when he took office on 1 December 2006 and has used a figure of 18,000 for the number of people killed since the inauguration.
